De Winterizing an RV

Winterizing your RV is essential to protect it from freezing temperatures, prevent damage, and ensure it’s ready to use when the weather warms up. Here’s a step-by-step guide to winterizing your RV:

1. Prepare the Water System

  • Drain the Freshwater Tank: Empty the fresh water tank completely.
  • Drain the Water Heater: Turn off the water heater and let it cool before draining. Open the pressure relief valve and remove the drain plug.
  • Drain Water Lines: Open all faucets, showers, and low-point drains to let water out.
  • Bypass the Water Heater: Install a water heater bypass kit if your RV doesn’t already have one to avoid filling it with antifreeze.
  • Add RV Antifreeze: Use non-toxic RV antifreeze and pump it through the water system using the water pump or a hand pump. Open faucets one at a time until pink antifreeze flows through.

2. Clean and Inspect

  • Empty and Clean Tanks: Dump and clean the black and gray water tanks. Add tank treatments to prevent odors.
  • Clean the Refrigerator: Empty, clean, and leave the refrigerator door slightly open to prevent mold and odors.
  • Inspect Seals and Vents: Check all doors, windows, and roof vents for leaks or damage. Reseal as necessary.

3. Protect Batteries

  • Disconnect the Battery: Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Keep it charged periodically to maintain its lifespan.
  • Solar Panels (if applicable): Disconnect solar panels or ensure they’re not charging during storage if batteries are removed.

4. Care for Tires

  • Inflate Tires: Inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
  • Use Tire Covers: Protect tires from UV damage by using tire covers.
  • Relieve Weight: Consider using jack stands to take the load off the tires.

5. Secure the Exterior

  • Wash and Wax: Clean and wax the RV to protect the finish.
  • Cover the RV: Use a breathable RV cover to protect it from snow, ice, and debris.
  • Close Vents: Ensure roof vents and windows are closed tightly.

6. Store Inside (If Possible)

  • If possible, store your RV in a climate-controlled indoor facility to minimize exposure to harsh weather.

7. Rodent Prevention

  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect and seal small openings where rodents could enter.
  • Remove Food: Clear out all food items, including crumbs.
  • Use Repellents: Place rodent deterrents like peppermint oil, mothballs, or traps inside and around the RV.

8. Miscellaneous Checks

  • Shut Off Appliances: Turn off propane tanks and appliances like the refrigerator and water heater.
  • Protect Furniture: Use moisture-absorbing products to prevent mildew.
  • Secure Belongings: Remove valuables and secure loose items.

9. Checklist for Spring

Before using your RV again, reverse the winterizing process by flushing out antifreeze, inspecting for damage, and reconnecting the battery.

By taking these steps, you can ensure your RV is well-protected during the winter months and ready for adventure in the spring.
