As temperatures start to plummet across the country the task of winterizing your vessel looms large. Regardless of storing your boat until warmer weather or continued use through the winter months, it is worth protecting vital systems from the dangers of corrosion, freezing and internal wear. This will save you money and prolong the life of your boat in the long run. Read on to learn more.
Engine Prep
As the beating heart of your boat, the engine can suffer complete and total damage when water is left inside there. Ensure it is fully drained of water and detached from the cooling system. Always follow the instruction manual to the highest order.
Fogging oil may be needed to prevent corrosion as well as oxidation, rust and cylinder wall scoring when the boat is not being used for longer periods.
Remember to give your fuel system a treatment. The addition of a stabilizing additive and then the engine sufficiently for the treated fuel to work its way through the system. Remember as well to replace fuel flyers and any water and fuel separators. This is very inexpensive and a must do for spring. Raw-water washdowns, livewells, bait tanks, and bilge pumps all need to be drained as well. Leaving even a small amount of water behind can lead to split hoses or damaged impellers.
Just Prior To Storage
Take out the drain plugs from the hull to stop water that is trapped from accumulating and freezing. Check the boat over once more to make sure everything is not only dry but also secured and protected.
Then use a marine-grade boat cover or move the boat into its winter storage location. Preparing a boat for winter does take some time but it is very well worth the effort. Just think of the peace of mind, the reduced costs of repair and a smooth launch to the water when the days get warmer once again in the spring. Prepare now and have fun next year!
