De Winterizing an RV

It’s winter in the valley, so it’s time to take your RV on a fun trip. But before you hit the road, you should run some basic inspections on it after it has been in storage. Read on for some helpful advice and tips to make your next vacation a success.

Charging the Battery

It’s time to start charging your battery because it hasn’t been used in a while. While the harger is plugged into the RV charger, it should stay off. Make sure the voltage is set at 12 volts and connect the red and black cables to the red and black indicators on your RV. Charge your power. If your RV has four batteries or more, let them charge overnight. An important part of the process is charging its batteries.

Flushing Out

It is required to to flush all the antifreeze out of the RV’s water system. From an outside water faucet, connect a garden hose to the water hookup location on your RV. Turn the faucets and hose on to allow water to completely flow throughout the system to remove the antifreeze and loose debris. You should do this for at least ten minutes. This will get rid of any antifreeze that is still in there. While you wait, ensure the toilet is flushed a few times.

Tightening Connections

Hoses need to fit tightly. Use this tip to make sure your tanks of propane are connected correctly. To open the line, turn the valve slightly. and ensure a sponge, nice and soapy is at the finish of the connectors. Can you perceive bubbles of air? If so, your line might be leaking. Check the connections again or change them. No bubbles? You’re ready to go now!

Stopping Water Flow

Your water lines (if you have don the above) are completely clean and ready for use. Take the hose off your RV and turn it off. You need to empty all your water tanks at an official water dump station.

Changing Filters

Now is an excellent time to change the filters in your water and air systems. If you want to be brave, you can even wash your windshield. In the summer, the screens also work as filters, so make sure they are clean and free of bugs.

Water Pump

Turn off the water outside and make sure you’re using the RV water tank. Now, start the electric pump. Check that the faucets are off. Let the pump build up full pressure for a few minutes. Listen and wait. Do you hear the pump start up again? If not, that’s excellent! If it doesn’t stop, there may be a leak in the pipe or the pump itself. You need to fix it before you leave if it’s leaking to be as safe as possible.
